I often lament how much better they would have been with real drummer.

I was watching out takes from Grateful Dead Movie last night and Billy reminded me of the drummer for the Rutles!

In fact it reminds me of me at my worst just playing notes. It was cool early 70s when it was part of a tune like PITB but otherwise extreme self indulgence IMO.Īside from a thunderous intro to The Other One (sometimes) their playing was generally lack luster. Like playing with a metronome that keeps random 's gonna foul you up! I ALWAYS took a break during drums/space portion. I swear it often sounds like they are in a world of their own not paying one bit of attention to the rest of the band! More than anything I think the inability of them to nail it down contributed to poor shows. Both would be so stoned as to be barely playing.Mickey playing what look like 's impactful! Billy joked about keeping time (he couldn't!). I've always puzzled over the "fact" the drummers are sub par at best.Sorry this may not be a popular position among Dead Heads but in latter days even Jerry said it was like playing in a popcorn machine. BIG Dead fan here! Saw MANY shows from 1970s to ~1993.
